Basket Drawers
Kitchen Pantry Potential storage solutions are everywhere— in every room. Try these easy ideas to stow your stuff with style.
ORGANIZED
BEDROOM OVERFLOW Increase storage in bedrooms and pick
up the overflow from closets with furniture
that has storage capabilities. An
armoire is one of the most versatile pieces
of furniture. Available in a range of styles
and sizes, armoires typically feature drawers
for stowing sweaters and blankets and
clothing rods for hanging shirts, jackets
and trousers. Or you can create a craft or
hobby closet to provide both work and
storage space.
Add more storage to bedrooms and
great rooms by including an upholstered
ottoman with concealed storage beneath
the seat—perfect for stowing blankets,
pillows and bed linens for bedrooms. A
hinged-seat box can corral entertainment
accessories such as DVDs, remote controls
and video game controllers. And unlike
expensive built-ins and closet systems,
storage furniture is portable and can move
with you.
Consolidate all sports stuff in the same
spot for easier access (and cut down on the
fire drills to find the ice skates 10 minutes
before lesson time). And to make the most
of small bedrooms and add storage for kids’
toys, build a platform bed. Use the space
below the bed to create bookshelves or
display niches for treasured toys or collections.
Store out-of-season clothing behind
the bookshelves and under the bed.
KITCHEN NICHES Increase kitchen storage by adding
shelves or niches to the end of a cabinet
run or the side of an island. This makes
a prime spot for storing cookbooks and
displaying kitchen collectibles.
You also can convert a shelf unit into a
kitchen pantry. Even a shallow space can be
retrofitted with a pair of French doors to
create a pantry where you can store every
kitchen staple and less frequently used appliances
such as blenders and waffle irons.
Curtain sheers on the inside glass panel
cleverly and stylishly disguise the contents.
Equip your cabinets with features that
maximize storage. For deep cabinets, install
pull-out shelves or baskets that use up all of
the space; for tall shelf spaces, use stacking
platforms. Corner cabinets—classic space
wasters—should be fitted with lazy Susans
or with what cabinet manufacturers call
“three-fourths circle-shape” shelves.
BATHROOM BASICS Expand bathroom storage space by adding
a shelf unit designed to fit large basket
drawers. Stash everything from extra towels
and washcloths to bathroom cleaning
supplies with simplicity. You can create
individual baskets for each kid in the family
so toothbrushes, makeup and hair care
supplies can be stowed without mix-ups.
